A C/Perl programmer dives into JavaScript, Css, Ruby, Rails

My name is Raul Parolari, Italian nationality, living in California. A C/Snmp programmer for years, then a Perl addict, I have started a sabbatical on Web technologies, diving into Javascript, Css, Ruby and Rails.

I was attracted to this area by the possibility that we have to-day of designing a web page rationally, separating Content, Presentation, Behaviour (rather than throwing html tags, styles and code into the usual chaotic unmaintenable cauldron), and supported on the server side by clean MVC frameworks.

In this regard, the last edition of the book from D. Flanagan (much more than classic Javascript, see the remarkable sections for scripting Css and Http) was particularly enlightening; Javascript emerges as language with a world of interesting features... like closures, objects, prototype property, classes.

Of course, on the server side it was impossible not to succumb to the excitement around the Ruby language and the Rails framework. The book from David A. Black spiced up even more my interest. It is amazing what combining Perl and Smalltalk can produce :-)

I am using this site as a documentation and experimentation tool.

Note: some of the animated demos (showing Ruby and Rails architecture) require a high display resolution; they are best viewed with Firefox on a Mac (I gave up trying to understand what some other browsers do with Css positioning). You must have Javascript enabled (to operate dynamic navigation bars).

Another section of this site is dedicated to a different purpose: to present the drawings of a very young and talented artist, Jiancarlos Benavente. Give a look!
